San Pedro Town is the main town on Ambergris Caye, the most northerly and largest of the 200 cayes off the coast of Belize. It is a world-class diving and snorkeling destination with dive sites on the barrier reef, just a 5 to 20 minute boat ride away. The clear, shallow waters and prevailing winds are ideal for windsurfing, sailing and kite surfing.
San Pedro Town has a unique feel, and offers sophisticated international cuisine in beach side restaurants, mixed with local cafes serving traditional Belizean food. The streets bustle with local artists and craftsman displaying their pieces.
Currency: The Belize Dollar has a fixed exchange rate to the US dollar: US $1 equals BZ $2.
Taxes: Hotel tax is 9%. General Sales Tax (GST) is 10% and is included in the prices.
Population: The population of Belize is approximately 311,480. Ethnic groups include Mestizo (Spanish-Indian), Creole (African-European), Garafunas (Caribs), Maya and European.
Languages: The official language of Belize is English and Spanish is widely spoken.
Government: Belize is an independent country with a democratically elected parliamentary government and is a British Commonwealth member.
Time Zone: Belize occupies time zone GMT -6, Same as US Central Standard Time. Daylight saving time is not observed.
Climate: The climate is subtropical with constant winds from the Caribbean Sea. The annual temperature averages 27 degrees Celsius.
