St. Georges Caye Celebration in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye!

Posted on 10 Sep, 2009 in the Belize News Category. 6 Comments

img_2218The month of September is a time of festivity here in Belize, when all Belizeans join together in celebration of two important occasions that took place in our history. One of those events is the Battle of St Georges Caye Day.On the 10th of September, 1798, the people of Belize, black and white, slave and free, won the Battle of St. George’s Caye.

The battle took place between an invading force from Mexico, attempting to claim Belize for Spain, and a small force of resident woodcutters called Baymen, who fought for their livelihood assisted by black slaves. After the final two and a half hour battle, ravaged by sickness, the Spaniards withdrew and the British declared themselves winners.

The territory that is now Belize was under dispute from as early as the mid 1750s by Great Britain and Spain. While Spain never occupied Belize, she apparently considered it part of her Central American territories, such as Mexico and Guatemala.

The British had entered the territory as of 1638 to harvest logwood and later mahogany. Spain recognized this trade in the Treaty of Paris (signed in 1763) but did not undertake to draw boundaries (which would have suggested that Spain was giving up claims of sovereignty to the area), leading to further disputes.

From September 3 to 5, the Spaniards tried to force their way through Montego Caye shoal, blocked by the defenders. The military commanders, Moss and Barrow, differed on where to put their resources for the next phase of the fight: Barrow thought they would go to the land phase, while Moss decided on defending St. George’s Caye. Moss arrived in time to stop the Spaniards, setting the stage for September 10.

That afternoon, the Spaniards and British lined up off St. George’s Caye. The Spaniards stormed through the channel, and the British engaged in a two-hour fight which ended in defeat for the confused Spaniards. Moss reported no one killed and the side in good spirits. Barrow was dispatched and arrived in time to see the end of the battle and prevent the slave men from boarding the enemy. The Spaniards were in full retreat by September 13, and Barrow agreed to send vessels to further push the Spaniards back.

Today is a full day of festivities… a Parade in the heart of San Pedro Town, Music, Dancing, Delicious food and a lot of fun at the beach! On our blog you will find a few pictures from this morning and we hope that you will enjoy them!

Hi Sandra what a lovely parade.
How lovely you both look in the pictures.
I guess your son was home with his father.
Maybe next year he can go.
Bridget talked to Colleen on the morning of the parade – she was going for the first time.
Thanks for sharing with us.
Love
Bridget & Rick
Your website is just “brilliant”

Thanks a lot for your sweet words Bridget and Rick! Louke truly enjoyed the parade! It was great to see all the children together being very proud and with true smiles on their face! Jan was the one who took the pictures and Alexander stayed with the nanny.
We saw Colleen today.. .she came specially for brunch to have Eggs Benedict, together with Glenn, Mark and Joan, Rachael and Annemarie. It was great to see them again. Mucho love, Sandra

Updated News from Portofino’s Diveshop by Ecologic Divers:

Posted on 08 Sep, 2009 in the Portofino News Category. No comments

Greetings!
September is here on Ambergris Caye and knock on wood we have not seen any threat of a major storm or Hurricane. Maybe the storm guru’s are going to be right in their predictions that this year will be a low season for any major storm.
The water temp as of today is 86 degrees and the sky is sunny which makes for a great day of diving.
We have a lot of news in this issue, first of all; we have purchased our own NITROX system and rebuilt the compressor.   PADI has started the Nitrox online course to make it easier for all divers to get certified and a NITROX user. (see below).  Ecologic Divers is going to sponsor trips to different areas in the world. so you can join your favorite Divemaster or Instructor and dive some place new.
IDC, DATES SET FOR Nov. 13th Staff  Nov. 15 for the Instructor development class.
We apreciate all who have dove with us and PLEASE tell your friends to come visit us!!!

Sincerely,

Stephen Lee for

PADI  introduces Nitrox  and Advanced Open Water Online courses:
You asked for it, now we have it. You can get certified as a Nitrox user at the comfort of your own home or complete all the Advanced OW book work before you come to the dive center.
The course follows the same model as the PADI Open Water Diver Course Online, divers must affiliate with a PADI Dive Center or Resort during registration and complete the knowledge development online – including a new version of the PADI Enriched Air Diver exam. Participants will also have access to an electronic version of the revised Enriched Air Diver Manual both during and after the course. Divers will use a computer to plan (or execute)  enriched air dives within no stop limits, maximum depth and oxygen exposure limits established by the instructor.
Attention Attention Attention:
Ecologic DIVERS is starting to dive the Blue hole in small groups 4 to 8 people only.

We decided to introduce small group diving  to this popular dive site.  Like many other dive centers we leave early in the morning and go straight to the Blue hole on our 33′ SEA RAY. Some divers just don’t like large dive groups so that was our motivation for this tour.  As many of you know we keep our groups to 6 or less this will be another extension of what we offer.
