During the years we are open we have established an excellent reputation with our Travel Trade for outstanding personalized service. Portofino Beach Resort is a very unique destination for your clients, offering them the vacation they deserve!

Since January 2009, we have been working extra hard on our marketing. Making the effort to assist our Travel Trade Partners, in selling Portofino Beach Resort and Belize, we have created this new website in several different languages, including our Portofino Blog which can be very useful to you and your valuable customers. Also this year  Sandra van Noord, one of the owners, has been very active in the Travel Trade. She helps the Belize Hotel Association voluntarily by representing Belize and over 55 individual Hotels located in Belize.

Portofino Beach Resort has partnered with a few other Exclusive Resorts in Belize under the name ‘Belize, Luxury Collection’ which has been and will be very active in participating in Trade Shows around the world. In September of this year, the ‘Belize, Luxury Collection’, was present at the TMLA (Travel Mart Latin America) which was held in Patagonia, Chile.  This proved to be a huge success and the ‘Belize, Luxury Collection’ met with a lot of Travel Partners.

Together with Luky and Nick Davies from Ka’ana Boutique Resort, Sandra has been very busy preparing for the CATM (Central America Travel Market), which will be held in El Salvador in October, and the WTM that will be held in London in November, as she will be there representing the ‘Belize, Luxury Collection’ there.

Since 2009, the Belize Hotel Association has also been to Vakantiebeurs in Utrecht (Holland) in January, Destinations: The Holiday & Travel Show in London (United Kingdom) in February, and TUR Swedish International Tourism & Travel Fair in Gothenburg (Sweden) and LIDS London International Dive Show in ExCel in London (United Kingdom) in March.  The Belize Hotel Association is also scheduled to participate in several Trade Shows for 2010, including the Vakantiebeurs in Utrecht (Holland) in January.

We are aware, at Portofino Beach Resort, that your business means a lot to us and we are making every effort in order to assist you in selling Belize. For this particular reason we try to attend as many of these shows as we can, in order to meet with you, our valuable Travel Trade Partners.

We believe that this greatly helps in providing you with a better understanding of our beautiful country and our products. In this way you can provide your clients with a tailored vacation and they can leave with pleasant memories of Belize. At any time you might have any questions regarding Belize, Luxury collection, Portofino Beach Resort or like to know more about Belize, please feel free to email us or send us any comments.

St. Georges Caye Celebration in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye!

Posted on 10 Sep, 2009 in the Belize News Category. 6 Comments

img_2218The month of September is a time of festivity here in Belize, when all Belizeans join together in celebration of two important occasions that took place in our history. One of those events is the Battle of St Georges Caye Day.On the 10th of September, 1798, the people of Belize, black and white, slave and free, won the Battle of St. George’s Caye.

The battle took place between an invading force from Mexico, attempting to claim Belize for Spain, and a small force of resident woodcutters called Baymen, who fought for their livelihood assisted by black slaves. After the final two and a half hour battle, ravaged by sickness, the Spaniards withdrew and the British declared themselves winners.

The territory that is now Belize was under dispute from as early as the mid 1750s by Great Britain and Spain. While Spain never occupied Belize, she apparently considered it part of her Central American territories, such as Mexico and Guatemala.

The British had entered the territory as of 1638 to harvest logwood and later mahogany. Spain recognized this trade in the Treaty of Paris (signed in 1763) but did not undertake to draw boundaries (which would have suggested that Spain was giving up claims of sovereignty to the area), leading to further disputes.

From September 3 to 5, the Spaniards tried to force their way through Montego Caye shoal, blocked by the defenders. The military commanders, Moss and Barrow, differed on where to put their resources for the next phase of the fight: Barrow thought they would go to the land phase, while Moss decided on defending St. George’s Caye. Moss arrived in time to stop the Spaniards, setting the stage for September 10.

That afternoon, the Spaniards and British lined up off St. George’s Caye. The Spaniards stormed through the channel, and the British engaged in a two-hour fight which ended in defeat for the confused Spaniards. Moss reported no one killed and the side in good spirits. Barrow was dispatched and arrived in time to see the end of the battle and prevent the slave men from boarding the enemy. The Spaniards were in full retreat by September 13, and Barrow agreed to send vessels to further push the Spaniards back.

Today is a full day of festivities… a Parade in the heart of San Pedro Town, Music, Dancing, Delicious food and a lot of fun at the beach! On our blog you will find a few pictures from this morning and we hope that you will enjoy them!

Hi Sandra what a lovely parade.
How lovely you both look in the pictures.
I guess your son was home with his father.
Maybe next year he can go.
Bridget talked to Colleen on the morning of the parade – she was going for the first time.
Thanks for sharing with us.
Love
Bridget & Rick
Your website is just “brilliant”

Reply from Portofino Beach Resort:
Thanks a lot for your sweet words Bridget and Rick! Louke truly enjoyed the parade! It was great to see all the children together being very proud and with true smiles on their face! Jan was the one who took the pictures and Alexander stayed with the nanny.
We saw Colleen today.. .she came specially for brunch to have Eggs Benedict, together with Glenn, Mark and Joan, Rachael and Annemarie. It was great to see them again. Mucho love, Sandra
